The Body Mindset (Author Interview)

The Body Mindset looks like a great health book.  What type of reader are you targeting your book to?

While all of us with body goals need mindset to achieve them, this book primarily speaks to those of us who struggle to get into the mindset it takes to improve and maintain their bodies.

You can’t get where you want to be with your body without getting into the mindset to get there.  Have you ever felt like you couldn’t make yourself to do the things you know you should?  Have you ever struggled with the same 10 pounds over and over or felt like you were taking one step forward and two steps backward with your body?  That’s because your mindset wasn’t in the right place to get you there.

We all know what we need to do.  We know we need to eat healthy and workout more.  We know we should give up sugar and processed foods and take the stairs.  There is not a person out there over eight years old that doesn’t know the difference between healthy and junk food and if we don’t, we can look it up.  Information is not the problem.  Most of us hold more information in the palm of our hands than the human race has ever had before.   Most of us can instantly pull up a video workout that will target any muscle group just by speaking those words into our phones. Never in the history of the world have we had more information about how to care for our bodies but as a society we are growing heavier.  Clearly, we know what to do.  We just don’t’ don’t know how to get ourselves to do it!  What we need is not more information, we need a better body mindset.  This is the book to help you get your mind in the place it has to be in to really make the changes you need to make to change your body.

What do you think makes a great health book?

I strongly believe that when it comes to their health people need do more than just someone to tell them what they should do.  People need someone who will take them by the hand help them through it.   They need guidance about what to think because it is what you think that makes you do and feel everything you do.

I think a great health book not only coaches people step by step through what they have to do, it connects with them emotionally and helps them get there mentally as well, and in addition to the book, we also have some great coaching and information websites available at coachifyme.com and thebodymindset.com

The Body Mindset is a different kind of health and fitness book because instead of telling you all the surface level things you must do to change your body, this book starts on the inside out and tells you all the things you must think in order to get into the mindset to change to your body.  I think that any fitness book that doesn’t change behavior where it starts (with thought) is doomed to fail because you can’t just put a band aid on a body problem by following another diet or starting another fitness plan.  You need to change the views and expectations that make you behave the way you do so that you can get into the mindset you need to be in to change your relationship with food and fitness.

If you are going to change your body, you need a better body mindset.

What inspired you when writing The Body Mindset?

I struggled with my weight and my body image most of my life.  I was always either on a diet or off the wagon and out of control.  I was victim to all the struggles and stress of my single parent life and I used them to justify my bad eating and sedentary lifestyle.  I considered taking care of my body to be trivial and thought I had so many things that were far more important than taking care of me.
I tried all the diets, and like many of us, I had the same goal on every January calendar of my life.  I just seemed to add a little more weight to it by the next year.

I always wanted a better body and I suffered emotionally and physically with the one I had.  I could just never get myself to consistently do the things is takes to get there.  Then, in college, I became fascinated with the power of mindset and I began to become aware of the ways my thoughts and stories were causing me to abuse and neglect my own body.  I began to see the ways I was being a victim to my own circumstances and began to change my thoughts about myself and my ability to choose my own physical reality.

With a new mindset, I found that I was finally able to stick to a diet.  In fact, as I got better I didn’t even need one.  I began to challenge the beliefs I had about myself and change the expectations and priorities that were shaping my body and controlling my actions and in the process I lost over ninety pounds, got off the couch and eventually started running half marathons.  When I recognized that incredible power that mindset can have to help you change your body, I felt I had to share it with others who were looking for answers to get themselves and their bodies under control.  I had to share the power mindset has to make you love and commit to doing the things you have to do to have the body you’d love to have.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?  Full time?  Part time? When did you decide to become a writer?

Right now, I teach full time and do therapy from time to time when I can, but really I am a writer at heart.  I have to write and there has never been a time in my life that I didn’t.  over the years, I’ve written short stories, a novel, a screen play and a little poetry.  Writing brings clarity to my life and helps me know what is real and I often sacrifice sleep for a little time to get into my own thoughts and write.

I have already begun my next book and though I’m not sure where my writing career will ultimately goal, I know that there will never be a time that I won’t be writing.  I didn’t choose writing.  Writing chose me.

When writing The Body Mindset did anything stand out as particularly challenging?

When I started the book it wasn’t necessarily a book.  I just wrote down the thought is was having as I worked through my own weight loss, fitness and body mindset.  That left me with over a thousand pages of loosely organized material to sort through in the end.

I guess my biggest challenge is that I am personally so passionate about this subject that it was really hard to limit what I had to say to the length of a book.  A body mindset has changed my life and I am still worried that some of my important ideas ended up in the editor’s delete files.

How did you come up with the concepts in The Body Mindset?

Very simple.  I couldn’t lose weight and even though it seemed like I was always on a diet, I just kept getting heavier and heavier and my mindset was to blame.  I came up with the concepts of this book as I worked through my own thoughts and beliefs and committed to the lifestyle that would make it happen for me.

I came up with the concept of mindset as a way to lose weight and get fit because, after nearly a lifetime of trying everything else, it is the only thing that gave me the power to permanently change my body and I know it can help you do the same.  Really, it is the only thing that will.

What do you like to do when not writing?

I’m a teacher and a pretty obsessed mom and now I’m also a grandma which has been one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me.  I also love to garden cook and to paint.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?
