This is the first acting book I’ve done that specifically covers scene work for actors preparing for a studio class or audition. A lot of common concerns are explained.
What do you think makes a good actor?
Hard question because there are so many variables. But a “good” actor draws upon both their own experiences as well as imagination to create characters that are compelling to watch. A good actor is also familiar with both the benefits and limitations of the medium in which they’re creating their character. A good actor is one who listens, speaks well and possesses an innate talent that makes them (for us) inevitable.
What are your goals for Short Scenes for Auditions and Acting Class?
I wanted to create a book that could be used as a companion text to my successful book SHORT MONOLOGUES FOR AUDITIONS, sold worldwide. The two books together create a solid foundation for both students of acting and professionals. There will be a third book next year that covers COLD READINGS for both auditions and acting classes.
What are your ambitions for your writing career? Full time? Part time?
I’ve written and published 15 books since 2007, so I would say it is full time. When did you decide to become a writer? I’ve always been a writer, writing stage plays and screen plays for various projects. I began writing books with ART OF THE MONOLOGUE in 2007.
When writing Short Scenes for Auditions and Acting Class did anything stand out as particularly challenging? Yes, I was particularly concerned about getting a wide variety of scenes in the book that were interesting and had limited production requirements. I also wanted to have unique subject matter that was different than what is contained in other scene books. For example, there is one scene about a UFO incident, a scene with a gypsy fortune teller and one is a comedy at a funeral home.
What do you like to do when not writing/acting? This is going to sound corny, but it’s true. I love to go for long walks (five or six miles) along the coastline in Malibu. I enjoy the sound of the sea and the calmness that it creates within me.
