Sin of Mages (Rift of Chaos Book 1) is the first of a promising new epic fantasy series. How far along is book 2?
Sometime during the middle of 201…maybe during the summer
What
do you think makes a great story?
Interesting
characters. Characters that you care about and something that drives
them. Also conflict that we can relate to.
Awesome
question. You see I read a lot of fantasy novels and it seems to me
like so many authors are afraid of having a lot of magic in their
story. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to have epic mage
battles and make magic somewhat of a priority in my books. The Rift
of Chaos trilogy is the results of me not being able to find an epic
fantasy novel in a world where there is a lot of magic. And yes there
is Harry Potter and others such as World of Warcraft but I wanted
something beyond that. At the same time I had to make sure that there
were limits with the use of magic so that there won’t be an over
powering problem
What
are your ambitions for your writing career? Full time? Part time?
I
want to be a full time writer. There is nothing better than telling
stories and of course for one of my books to become a movie. I would
also like my books to become an anime film or series one day. Who
knows.
When
did you decide to become a writer?
I
was in college switching majors. I switched from Fine Arts to Graphic
Design and then to Business Administration while having a minor in
graphics. I was afraid that I would not find a “real” job in the
real world. I was also selling stuff online (I was an internet
marketer) but my businesses failed miserably. Then I heard of Amanda
Hockins selling millions of copies of her books with the amazon
kindle. I already had experience with ebooks (another one of my
businesses) but I had failed. Now reading Amanda Hocking’s story
inspired me because I knew that I wanted to do something creative but
I was really afraid because my family always told me to choose
something that makes money. However, something clicked for me when I
found out that I could publish my stories on the kindle so easily and
interact with readers directly. I knew that I had found what I was
looking for. My dream career. Since middle school and high school I
have been making character designs and writing stories for my
characters but never finish. I made little comic books in high school
but I knew that I didn’t want to go the comic book way. And so I
started.
I
began to write and was happy with my choice and wanted to focus in
the fantasy genre. I told myself that I am going to make this work
one way or another.
When
writing Sin
of Mages (Rift of Chaos Book 1)
did anything stand out as particularly challenging?
I
like the diversity in characters that I created with Sin of Mages.
One of the things that I wanted to show in my books was people of
different skin colors working together. The characters in my books
were all from different countries and assembled to save the world and
help each other.
I
had rewritten the story many times. I wanted it to be about a Master
Mage who was betrayed by his apprentices. I also did not want the
main character to be all good. I wanted him to be the cause of
problem, the very reasons why his apprentices were causing havoc. I
came up with the story idea looking back at my youth and how I was
raised. How parents raised their kids in a certain way and then
wonder why they are so chaotic when their older.
What
do you like to do when not writing and creating these books?
I like to watch movies. I live in
Netlix. I like rave parties, electronic music, heavy metal. I love
going to concerts. I love going to anime conventions and reinansance
fairs. Typical nerd stuff. I like going to the gym and eating
healthy. I still dream of going to japan one day.
