  • Tales From the Frontline (Author Interview)

     https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BTJ4WM4R/Tales From The Frontline looks like a great book.  What can you tell us about it?This book is the combination of two men’s writing of their account in the Civil War written just a year or two after the conflict ended. One was an early version of a combat reporter who worked for a newspaper in the North and was documenting what he saw. His writing offers a very descriptive aspect of the horrors of war. He was also captured by the rebels and gives a level of detail of the tortures of being a POW. The other man was a veteran for the North and give his witness of some of the clashes that he was involved in. The book is minimally edited so these stories are not written from the angle of a modern-day author re telling the stories this is the description right from the men that lived it. I wanted to feel like you are sitting across from these guys, and they are telling you first-hand how horrible it was. That’s an amazing cover.  Can you tell us about it?When I do a cover I just start going through pictures and thoughts of how can I capture in pictures what this book is about. Sometimes it is just an illustration other times as they say a picture is worth a thousand words. I think this cover is more like 60,000 words. It is a Union soldier with a tattered U.S. Flag that is all tore up. I colored it and added drops of blood.I felt that this tells the story of even though the North won (Union Soldier and coloring of the flag) that it came at a high price – human life (tattered flag and blood drops). Even though the Union won I feel that on the mans face in the picture he is not gloating that winning cost him a lot personally. Can you tell us a little about the two veterans that share their stories?The men that wrote this (the embedded writer and the veteran) both fought for their lives. True bravery comes from ordinary men that are put in extraordinary situations and I believe that is who these men are. No one comes out of war unscathed, and these men didn’t either. I hope that by reading this we will remember all veterans and the sacrifices they gave for our Country no matter what war it was. What scene or section did you have the most fun writing?The section that I am not sure I would say fun but was interesting to me because I knew very little about it was the river boats and all the battles they had. It was eye-opening the close combat they had and all the damage they inflected and received. What inspired the idea for the book?I love history and am always looking through old books and articlas to dig up stories for my Podcast (The Mad Wild West) and as I search I come across gems like these stories that I felt need to be retold because they are forgotten for the most part. How did you come up with the title for the book?These stories are truly form the frontlines. Love My Colors looks like a powerful book.  Can you tell us about your motivation to write it?

Growing up, not loving my skin color, praying and living in the anticipation, that every morning when I woke up my skin would be lighter. Bullied at school, for the color of my skin, and what I wore to school, not having a father figure in my life, my mom working extremely hard to give me the best education. People complimenting my light skin cousins, right to my face and looking at me with disgust and saying, “Why is she so black?” Trying to make friends with light skin people, so that society would accept me. The first time someone told me that I am beautiful was in Canada and it was a white person. That had me search deep into my soul and question my hate for my skin color. I realized it something that stems way back in slavery and the norms of the society. You see, society has placed me and other dark skin people in this box, if you are not light skin you aren’t beautiful.

The metamorphosis of getting to love my skin by uncovering the box and walking out of it, has not been an easy task, but the incidents that have occurred, have shaped and molded my life and have given me the courage to step boldly in society, unapologetically and to work hard at my dreams. Not letting the negativity of naysayers’ sip into my bones and contaminate how I feel about my complexion. Not afraid to look at myself in the mirror and admire my dark melanin. I try to encourage  young girls and boys and everyone from every ethnicity, nationality, culture that you should love yourself, because deep beauty comes from loving self, and your skin color was given for a reason, so you need to find out your purpose and think positive, because whatever negativity you perceive about self can be detrimental to your growth.
           
What will readers get out of your book?
I would like my readers to know that the society you were born into, will always change, so don’t get into the box society has labeled for you. You cannot change the color of your skin, but you can definitely change your circumstances by changing the label on the box and making the world a better place.


Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing Love My Colors?
About 40 to 50 percent of the novel is my life, I can relate to the character pain, suffering, joy and sadness, wanting to be recognized, not liking her skin color. Living truthfully in the moment, of being the character. It took the character a long time to realize, someone perception of you doesn’t have to become your reality.

What do you like to do when not writing?
As a Dietitian, I enjoy helping others make better food choices. I like hiking in the summertime, reading fiction, non-fiction and motivation books to help keep me grounded. I have recently taken up acting, and find it rewarding to feel someone else emotions. Also, like helping to uplift others, to love self and don’t wait for the world to love you.
