L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 38 looks like an exciting collection of shorts.  Can you tell us a little about it?

With 25 award-winning authors and illustrators, this collection is a masterwork.

The stories are diverse and original.

From saving the mammoths and the magic that requires, to being part of a monster-hunting family and keeping secret that your BFF is a monster. Or being a detective bent on stopping time-traveling tourists from wreaking havoc in your time-stream to a space opera murder mystery where the ʻerased crimeʼ threatens the mission. From dark fantasy to magical realism, these new authors have twists you don’t see coming.

The beautiful art and writing tips by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson, Frank Herbert, L. Ron Hubbard, and Diane Dillon are just as wonderful as the collection of stories. How would you like to read one of Frank Herbert’s rare stories or know his “Single Most Important Piece of Advice?”

 Volume 38 is a treasure.

Also, you’ll love this collection from past and future science fiction masters because these stories are hand-picked by some of your favorite authors—including Brandon Sanderson, Orson Scott Card, Nnedi Okorafor, Robert J. Sawyer, and Jody Lynn Nye.

How many books do you have planned for the series?

We hope the series will go on for many more years.

What can you tell us about some of the authors featured in this volume?

The Grand Prize Golden Pen Award went to Desmond Astaire from Marquette Heights, IL, for his time-travel story “Gallows.” The Golden Brush went to Zaine Lodhi from Lakewood, FL, for illustration for “Agatha’s Monster.”

There are also bonus stories and writing advice from Frank Herbert, David Farland, L. Ron Hubbard, Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and Diane Dillon.

What inspired L. Ron Hubbard to start the Writers of the Future Contest?

Well, it is best to hear it from him. L. Ron Hubbard wrote this for the introduction to the first volume:

“In these modern times, there are many communication lines for works of art. Because a few works of art can be shown so easily to so many, there may even be fewer artists. The competition is very keen and even dagger sharp.

“It is with this in mind that I initiated a means for new and budding writers to have a chance for their creative efforts to be seen and acknowledged.” —L. Ron Hubbard

What will readers get out of your book?

Entertainment. The stories are diverse and original. You are guaranteed to find fresh new voices with authors and artists from around the world.

Here are a couple of the reviews:

“Writers of the Future Vol 38 is a literary smorgasbord where each new story comes with a feeling of excitement and mystery. With so many short stories, one might imagine it easy to put down between breaks, but instead, it’s a binge read. Just one more, you think, and the next thing you know the entire book is gone!” —The International Review of Books, Gold Badge

“Thirteen original stories described as powerful, unpredictable, nicely crafted, appealing with many twists.” —Tangent Online

“Captivating, compelling, and exceptionally well edited. It delivers.” —OnlineBookClub.Org

How were the stories picked for this volume?

The Writers of the Future collection is an anthology of the winning stories in the international contest. It was created and endowed by L. Ron Hubbard. After several years of success in fostering new writers, the Illustrators of the Future Contest followed. The winning stories are illustrated and published annually. Critics have described it as a perennial “glimpse of tomorrow’s stars,” a “must-have for the genre reader,” and “the bestselling science fiction anthology series of all time,” it is today the most enduring and top-ranking publication of its kind.

The winning stories are selected by New York Times Bestselling authors including Brandon Sanderson, Orson Scott Card, Nnedi Okorafor, Kevin J. Anderson, Brian Herbert, Jody Lynn Nye, Larry Niven, Robert J. Sawyer, Katherine Kurtz, Eric Flint, and many others. The stories are hand-pick the best of the best each year.

There is no entry fee, and stories are judged blind, making it a fair competition for all authors who enter. It is an excellent program for new authors and readers, who often discover their next favorite writer.

Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when selecting stories for L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 38?

When the Coordinating Judge for this volume, Dave Farland, was asked, he said

“Judging the stories becomes a challenge when I have thirty or forty stories in any quarter that I think would be worthy additions to the anthology. Just narrowing the good stuff down becomes a struggle.”

There are thousands of stories entered, and it is challenging to select the best of the best.

Where can readers find out more about your work?

The easiest place to find the books available in the series is on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XXCD2DQ

Volumes 25-38 are available on Kindle, and most are still in paperback.

The paperback are also available in bookstores, if you prefer to support your local bookstore.

What resources exist for aspiring writers that may want to enter the contest?

The Writers of the Future offers several free resources to help new authors (links below). One of the first things we recommend is to read one or more of the book to give you an idea of the quality of stories winning. You will see the editorial standard and market (i.e.: stories need to be appropriate for young readers and family entertainment). Most importantly, you will learn from the judges as each book has real-world advice to help new authors.
