What motivated you to write the book?
I wrote this book for my son who has always loved bison and who was having his own challenges with pooping on the potty. There aren’t many children’s books about bison and my son has always loved reading books. We have had a lot of success reading books about life’s “firsts”. Whether that is going to the doctor, the dentist, school, etc. One night I was inspired to attempt to write my own story to help my son and I just kind of ran with it!
What age group did you write the book for?
Primarily for toddlers that are potty training (so presumably 2-4) but it can be enjoyed by any child that likes animals.
Can you tell us a little about Nolan?
Nolan is a bison who is often nervous. In this story he is nervous about pooping on the potty, but he has some nerves about many things in life. There are some parallels to my son who frequently needs some encouragement and help to tackle something new in life. I think it’s not terribly uncommon for many “covid-babies” that maybe didn’t get as many chances for socialization due to the pandemic.
I hope to write quite a few more stories about other topics that Nolan is nervous about but perseveres.
How long did it take you to write Nervous Nolan Bison Goes Poopy on the Potty?
I somehow managed to write the bulk of it in about 2 hours one night while my wife was doing a puzzle! It was far from ready though. I went through 7 months of revisions as well as the process of finding and working with an illustrator before it was published.
How did you come up with the title for the book?
Given that one of my objectives in writing this book was to write a book about a bison, and particularly a nervous character, I was pretty firm on “Nervous Nolan Bison”. I then simply opted for the straightforward approach on what he was tackling in the story, which in this case was pooping on the potty. I expect to follow the same format going forward. “Nervous Nolan Bison Goes to School” might be the next one!
Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing Nervous Nolan Bison Goes Poopy on the Potty?
For me, the process of learning how to write a children’s book, how to find an illustrator and how to self-publish was a challenge. It was an absolutely blast though and I hope to continue doing it.
What do you like to do when not writing?
First and foremost, I like to spend time with my family. Beyond that, I am a big sports fan. I love to cook, and I particularly enjoy reading fantasy novels.
