Can you tell us a little about Justice Makes a Difference?
Justice Makes a Difference is about a young girl’s leadership journey. Through books, she learns how to use her skills to make a difference in the world. She begins by questioning whether she is too young to be a difference-maker. She soon discovers that you are never too young to change the world. She walks in this power of self-awareness, tenacity, perseverance, and courage.
What motivated you to write the book?
I wanted to share about the unsung sheroes and heroes that inspired me on my leadership journey. Charles Hamilton Houston inspired me to become a civil rights attorney. Shirley Chisholm motivated me to serve in my community. Dr. Wangari Maathai provided the blueprint for community building.
What age group did you write the book for?
The book is for children K-5.
Can you tell us a little about Justice?
Eight-year-old Justice is a dreamer and builder. She dreams of a better world. Yet, she recognizes that dreams are just aspirational goals until you decide to take action. Throughout the book, she develops the skills needed to build a better future whether it be starting a community garden or serving in the local shelter.
How long did it take you to write Justice Makes a Difference?
The process took over a year. I spent time learning more about ordinary people who had an extraordinary impact on the world. I studied the leadership journeys of people like Ella Baker who inspired young people during the Civil Rights Movement to take a stand for justice.
How did you come up with the title for the book?
The title is an invitation to all readers. It invites each of us to make a difference in our communities. This is a recognition that each community member has unique gifts and talents. Collectively, we can leverage these gifts to impact the world around us in a positive way. Justice helps to model the way.
Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing Justice Makes a Difference?
The greatest challenge was writing for a young audience. I am a law professor who tends to write textbooks and research papers. I had to focus on how to write to a younger audience.
What do you like to do when not writing?
I enjoy traveling when I am not writing. My dream is to visit every country in the continent of Africa.
