Nowhere To Call Home looks like a great book. What can you tell us about it?
This book is about a girl named Camille who grew up in an abusive home. She was taken out of that abusive home and put into the foster care system where she endured more abuse. There were moments through all of this when she found peace in her life. But through all of the good and bad times, Camille fought through it all to become the woman that she is today. Its about finding the goodness in all the bad and turning your life into something positive.
Any plans to turn it into a series?
No, I have no plans to turn it into a series right now, however I do have a children’s book coming out based on relationship with one of the horses named Juliet and Camille.
That’s an amazing cover. Can you tell us about it?
I love going horseback riding because it brings me so much peace. I went one day and snapped this picture because it put me in the mind frame of my first foster home that changed my life. When I first got to that foster home this was the visual that I had just all open gorgeous peaceful land.
Can you tell us a little about Camillie?
Camille is a 8 years old African American girl, she was moved all over. She was introduced to horses when she was 10 years old. Horses became a peaceful place for her basically her safe haven. Camille grew older to become very successful with 2 kids of her own. She had 2 kids of her own and even adopted 2 more children from the foster care system.
What scene or section did you have the most fun writing?
When I was introduced to my first foster home with the farm. It was the first time I felt like a child. I wasn’t scared, I was accepted and got the feel for a family setting. I loved going to school and I actually looked forward to coming home. I wasn’t scared of what would happen to me when I got home. I was started to trust the male figure in my life I wasn’t afraid of men. Writing this part of the book took me back to that sense of being safe and peace.
What inspired the idea for the book?
I noticed that I was so closed off and cold, especially in relationships and I had major trust issues. I started therapy and I was told that I should journal to get it all out. I would talk to random people, and I was always told that I had a story to tell that could help someone. So, I just turned it into a story, my story.
How did you come up with the title for the book?
I thought about when was the last time, I was able to call somewhere HOME in my childhood and I thought maybe once. I never really had a place that I felt 100% wanted so that title stuck with me while I was writing.
Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing Nowhere To Call Home?
No, because when you have never really had a home it’s not as hard to think about it. It did hurt as I started writing because I had numbed myself to all the pain so I wouldn’t have to think about any of it. Writing it down opened up all the old wounds.
What do you like to do when not writing?
Horseback riding, spending time with my kids, and traveling.
