I
Understand
is the first book in the Jacob Kearns Series. Including the already
published prequel how many books do you plan for this series?
Actually,
I purposely mislead my readers in that part. ‘I Understand’ is
the mid-way point between the prequel short story ‘Mid Harvest
Road’ and Book 1 which will be titled ‘The Imps Eye’.
Those
who follow me already know my writing style is about twists with
every other element in the stories, I felt a mid-point Novella was
the right touch. ‘I Understand’ is intended as a large expanded
build up from ‘Mid Harvest Road’, introducing a numerous influx
of new characters to the story. But even with all the things that
happen, this is only half the cast. The other half will be introduced
in ‘The Imps Eye’.
My
readers were left with several questions after ‘Mid Harvest Road’
which I answer here but now they will have many more questions. I
promised that ‘Mid Harvest Road’ was only a fraction of the
story. I am hoping to surprise them with ‘I Understand’.
What
do you think makes a great story?
Making
the reader want to come back for more of your story is what makes it
great.
I
have found out through years of experience the truth in the saying,
‘If it is stupid but it works, then it isn’t stupid.’
When
I blogged, things I thought were just dumb to write about turned out
to be my best work. That taught me a valuable lesson in being humble
and never doubting what makes a great story.
What
inspired you when writing I
Understand?
A
combination of the timeline I had set for myself and the location I
was writing the story. I wrote this book while working on the
military base in Afghanistan.
To
be honest, there was a real chance I would never get to finish it if
those incoming rockets would have hit me.
What
are your ambitions for your writing career? Full time? Part time?
Right
now it is Part time. I would love to make it a full-time gig but I
don’t have the following for that just yet. I am working on it.
When
did you decide to become a writer?
I
have written stories since grade school but when I was 15, I decided
to put myself to a test. I entered a writing contest for Wizard
Magazine and won 2nd place. I thought back then, ‘maybe I really
don’t suck that bad as a writer’.
I
stopped writing after college and decided to start again about 6
months ago at the age of 41. I put myself to another test when I
wrote the ‘Mid Harvest Road’ Short Story thinking I was going to
get terrible reviews. To my surprise I got five stars from my first
four reviews. I guess I don’t suck that bad still but I want to
improve.
When
writing I
Understand
did anything stand out as particularly challenging?
Explosions
and the suicide bomber who killed those four individuals on Nov.
11th. The night before I was almost halfway through the Novella when
I fell asleep writing. Hours later a loud explosion woke me up
followed by the sound of rocks hitting the roof of my building. I
found out later that less than a five minute walk from my room, a
spot I walk past every morning, a suicide bomber killed several
soldiers.
I
then found out the soldiers that died sacrificed themselves to save a
much larger group. I went back and changed the dedication of my book
to those four fallen.
How
did you come up with the story for the Jacob
Kearns Series?
I
based it on my love of paranormal magic and the people I have met in
my world travels. Several characters are based on real life people
with their dialects. My readers have already told me they are
fascinated by the tone dialect I use.
The
story itself is a combination of several stories I came up with when
I was much younger. And to top it off I suffered from nightmares for
years and I used to write them down as a kind of self-therapy. So the
scares in the book actually come from my nightmarish notes.
What
do you like to do when not writing?
I work long hours. I don’t exaggerate
when claiming a 70 hour work week. It is actually in my contract. So
writing is what I do on my time off. It helps get my mind off this
place and relaxes me.
The number one place to go is my
